In the digital marketing world, SEM and SEO are the most discussed topic along with other marketing elements, but these concepts are sometimes misinterpreted to be the same thing. Although both are search engine services, there are some differences between the two that we will be highlighting here. It can get more confusing when you need to run a paid marketing. So which one would best suit your business needs? Here’s an overview of SEM and SEO.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

SEM is a marketing technique to enhance a website’s visibility on the search engines where Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Reputation Marketing go hand-in-hand. SEM uses some of the SEO tactics to achieve its marketing goals, but it a little different practice than SEO as it focuses more on organic, paid results in SERP.

So SEM is a marketing process that buys advertising space in the search engine ranking. This helps you get more visibility by ranking higher on the search engine. So rather than building strategies to appear on the first page, you can pay for it and get the recognition. This technique is also known as Pay-Per-Click advertising as you pay only when someone clicks on your ad. You can get started through Google Adwords and get your ads published in the Google Search Results.

Search Engine Optimization

SEO, on the other hand, is a technique to optimize the website in order to generate organic, free traffic to the site. There are two major elements in SEO – On-Page SEO that includes your website and its optimization and Off-Page SEO which is the process of generating links to your website from other sources, which includes social bookmarking, blogs, articles, social media, etc.

However, SEO is not simply about building links or writing blogs and articles but it goes way beyond that. There are so many components that come into factor when improving a website’s SEO and SEM also happens to be a part of SEO.

So is SEO and SEM different?

SEO and SEM are intertwined; both are marketing techniques but they play a different role in the marketing domain. If you ask which tactic is better, then it completely depends on your needs. If you want to go slow and steady then go with the SEO strategy. SEM is a paid service and tends to provide results quicker. So brainstorm with your team and set the right strategies to meet your marketing objectives.
