Using Infographics for content marketing is becoming increasingly popular technique now. Infographics are being used to illustrate a range of different information, including new employee announcement, data visualization, humor and education. However, with their exhaustive use, the quality and originality of the infographic are being questioned. So lets answer the question above, ‘What makes an excellent infographic?
Infographics should be interesting enough to make people want to print it and hang it on their walls. However, as this is living on the Web, the primary purpose of an infographic is to spark informed conversation and action, which means having a point of view and expressing it in a way that empowers the audience to speak or act.
There are a few things that make a good infographic: good data that is well processes and organized, structure (narrative or otherwise), copy, and visual style. For example: Do you want readers to be able to accurately compare values and rank the regions? Then, maps or bubbles are inappropriate rather use a bar graph or a dot plot. In simple words, think about function before you think about aesthetics.
An infographic designer should have experience, possess sharp design skills, handle data accurately and show variety and growth through their work. Amazing content makes an amazing infographic, but that is not sufficient, it should be amazing enough that empower readers to share it with others. Emotional appeal, concrete visuals, credible data points, and in the end, amazing art work, create an excellent infographic. An infographic should have compelling data with a unique design that highlights the information instead of hiding it away.
The concept of infographics as a pizza. Think of this almost as an infographic, but with words.
Concept: The idea for the pizza: as in thinking, “What would happen if I combined tomato sauce, cheeze and bacon?”
Data: The ingredients. Collect pizza bread, tomato sauce, cheeze, bacon,
Story: The recipe. This tells us what to do when, and how it should happen.
Design: The process of combining all the ingredients in he respective order into a scrumptious pizza, baking in the oven and placing it nicely on a plate.
It may, of course, happen that you get the ingredients first and have to work out what to make, rather than the other way around. One of the biggest success factor for an infographic is timeliness. Create one when a topic is buzzing for best results. It should also be meaningful.Unfortunately, most infographics these days are really just charts, but with more drawing on them. The best infographics convey a lot of information in a lot less space than it would take to write about the topic or have regular graphs of the data.
This is something many designers don’t really get: the goal of a graphic is not to make numbers “interesting,” but to transform those numbers (or other phenomena) into visual shapes from which the human brain can extract meaning.
